Using LEGO bricks to combat pollution
Tackling pollution is a major goal for many students at the Aga Khan School (AKS), Osh, especially for the Grade 5 students in the school’s LEGO Robotics Club.
The LEGO Robotics Club consists of students at AKS, Osh, who come together once a week after school to combine their passion for LEGO bricks and robotics while applying what they have learnt to real-world issues. Through this club, the students develop their critical thinking, goal setting and teamwork skills, while also learning more about technology, engineering, design and more.
"I enjoy playing with the LEGO and making things come to life,” said Grade 5 student participant of the club Nurmamadova Rabiya.
Before the end of the academic year, the students came together to start brainstorming innovative ways to combat the ever-growing pollution in their city and the wider country. The students were divided into three groups to focus on different but related topics: water pollution; pollution of the land and rubbish around the city; and air pollution.
After conducting their research, the students presented their findings to their peers, teachers and staff members on 24 May, who were all impressed with the presentations.
“The students get really involved with this club and learn new things every day,” said Umarov Bakhtiyar, the club's coordinator and a history teacher at AKS, Osh.
